As a cultural institution, ZKM - the Center for Art and Media (Zentrum fur Kunst und Medientechnologies) in Karlsruhe holds a unique position worldwide. It responds to the rapid developments in information technology as well as the changing social structures. Production and research, exhibitions, symposia, concerts and events as well as documentation all take place in one place.

Thus, the ZKM is regarded as a leading centre linking art and digital technology. It is involved in the project through two complementary institutes:

The ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics combines artistic work with research and development and is therefore an international forum for international discourse and exchange. By holding concerts, symposia and festivals on a regular basis it brings together composers, musicians, musicologists, music software developers and listeners interested in contemporary music. The head of the Institute for Music and Acoustics is Ludger Brümmer.
The ZKM | Institute for Visual Media aims to provide a forum for creative and critical debate on current developments in media culture. Its activities focus on the research and development of visual technology: digital video, computer graphics, computer animation, web technologies, and interactive systems. The spectrum of productions ranges from digital video, DVD-production and 3D animation to interactive installations and environments, from software systems for the real-time generation of natural and architectural environments to audio-visual applications for performance contexts. The head of the Institute for Visual Media is Bernd Lindermann.

Within AMBIANT, the production of new form of artworks, stimulated by the workshop’ discussions and experiments of accurate digital arts will be very important addition to ZKM's activities. The relations to European institutions working in the digital arts sector will be strengthened. The Federal State of Baden-Wurttemberg as a region of high-level cultural life and contemporary arts will encourage these activities with a focus on European exchange.
